loading word without a cd/dvd drive??

I am wondering if there is a way I can put word onto my laptop that doesn`t have a cd dvd? I have a lap top with word on it. And that has a cd/dvd but my ickle notebook hasn’t got either!! Can I transfer it somehow?? I hope this makes sence.

transfer it to a usb memory stick, then just drag and drop off the stick onto your new one.

Er, I sort of agree but . . .

You can't simply copy a program from one computer to another because the necessary registry entries won't be carried over. You need to get the installation program, rather than Word itself, onto your laptop. So you need to put the Word CD into the only drive that's available to it, then copy the set-up program from it onto a media stick.

If you've not got the CD you can't do the transfer.

If your laptop has internet access, a suitable alternative would be to download OpenOffice. It's the free alternative to Microsoft Office which many businesses, local authorities, police forces, etc, now use instead of Microsoft products:

Copy an install disk as you would see it on a CDRom, to a stick.
When you insert the stick, you should be able to autorun it and install direct from the stick.

Ignore this "advice" completely - as has been correctly pointed out, it won't work at all...

Mark, I've done this numerous occassions transferring programs from one computer/laptop to a laptop with no disk drive and all works fine.

No you haven't, at least, not something like Microsoft Word. You may have copied the setup routine from one computer to another, but that's not the same thing at all...

Some small programmes need just an install directory copying.
Most programmes need installing .. like Windows .. Word .. etc.

Big difference.

An external USB cd drive may be a good investment.

Following on from all the above.
There is now another alternative to MS Office. It is called Libreoffice and is also free. It is quite new and I know nothing about it other than that is produced by ex members of the Open Office team.

Be careful opening Microsoft Office documents containing a lot of special formatting in free office suites. Sometimes formatting can be lost or adjusted slightly.

Many many thanks for all those answers. Sorry I havnt got back up to now, been a bit busy setting up a new business venture..just 14hrs a day 7 days!! I do believe I`m just about keeping sane?? Yes, especially if you have a USB memory stick.

Copy the entire contents of the original CD onto a usb memory stick, insert memory stick into the computer with no CD drive and then run the setup file and it will install from the memory stick fine.
