I work online and would like to continue doing so from south africa, do I need to apply for work permits as well as residency permits, as I will still be working for a german firm on a german server, therefor working from Europe.

As obtaining a residency permit is easyer and much cheaper than a working permit the question is do I need to get one???

I don't think you would (but this is my uneducated opinion) as the work permit is needed if you will be taking a position that could be filled by a South African and the wages you earn are from within South Africa and therefore income tax should be deducted.

To be honest if you went on a tourist visa - who's going to know you are working anyway?  I'd just go and do it.

Are you only going for the short term? - The duration of the visitors visa or are you going to try and extend the visa while you are there?

was planning on 6 months or so with a 6 month temp residency visa, then if all is going well may extend
I really don't think you'll have a problem.  I used to work in South Africa actually.  Where are you going?

a place called Hout Bay, around 15 miles out of Cape Town
