asking a question like that hollie makes me think of the quote from the Great and Good Doctor Emmett Brown
'Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads'
When a team is in possession of the ball their objective is to cross the opponents goal line and score a touchdown. From gaining possession they have 4 attempts to move forward 10 yards. These are called 'downs' First go is therefore 1st and 10. If they move forward say 4 yards before being tackled then the next play is 2nd and 6. If they fail to move forward in 4 attempts they give possession to opponents who then begin the same process. If the first team does make 10 yards in 4 attempts they get another 4 attempts to make another 10 yards etc. This continues for 1 hour and then we know which team won.
