what causes a white mould on the top layer of soil on my indoor plants. it is not killing the plants but looks unsightly

Is it quite humid in your house? Are you over-watering?

I'd scrape off that top layer (including mould) and top it up with a good potting compost.
Sounds as if your compost is stale & lacking in nutrients. Re-pot using fresh compost then cover the surface with horticultural grit.
