5 could be "telephoned", but it's a bit of a push:-

Junction = "T"

Scattered rind, or PEEL, = elep

Sharpened = Honed

Telephoned.

Looks a bit convoluted to me.

Many thanks for the help. Chelle 7272, bobneish and mrchirpy ..had no idea where to start with Daryl. The other one have been trying to get an anagram containing the word rind.but that is an ingenous solution.

5 is in (9) as my copy says sharpen not sharpened so no d needed!

Yes, I've just seen that I gave a ten letter answer to a nine letter clue.
Am I allowed to change it to "Telephone"?
