I am pestered with requests to update Java on my laptop (from Sun Microsystems). Is this normal?

Just update it. Ver 23 at the moment I think.
Why not go into the java panel in C Panel, and set it to 'check manually'
Than do it once every few weeks. That's what I do.
It is always a good idea to keep Java up to date as many web sites use Java.

If you get prompted to update it then go ahead and do it.
help....as I was installing my java just now...an alert came up from Spybot about a registry change,and should it be allowed?
Is this standard with Spybot?
You should keep the Java up to date.
Be aware that with Java the old version remains installed too. So after the install you will see previous Java versions in Add/Remove programs.
Older versions can be removed no problem.
