Sending waxed cheese abroad
4 Answers
I have been emailing a lady in Madagascar for 3 years now and sometimes as there diet is quite poor I send treats, such as chocolate and dried milk, foodstuffs that will keep. But recently she says her two children love cheese which they very rarely can afford to buy. She asked if I could send some cheese, but I said it would go off. Then I remembered that cheese with a wax coating, the wax acts as a preserve. Do you think it would be possible to send a small waxed cheese and it still be edible after three weeks by airmail?

I was given it by the Manager of the Capital Grille in Houston (The Cap Grille is an upmarket steak house chain in the States and the Houston one numbers Bush Snr as a regular user. Panelled look, great bar and good steaks......
Anyway this cheese sat in the fridge for 10 months (my initial reaction being yuk) and then one evening I was without so I opened it and was gob-smacked - wonderful!!
It comes from the University of Washington Dairy - the cheddar is the best.....and they operate over the web so you should be able to send direct.
