The screen has been cracked and no longer works. The cost of a replacement varies depending on whether it is LED or LCD - which Is better?

It will need to be replaced with the same screen the laptop had in it from new, a different sort will not work.

Sometimes they have a sticker on the palmrest stating it's an LED screen if that's what it was, but if there isn't one then removing the screen and checking the part number is the only way to be sure you get the right one.
Apart from what Chuck says, the better one will be whichever one is the most expensive ;o)
LED would, in theory, be better. (and therefore more expensive)

But as I said, you can't just swap one for the other, you need to replace like for like.

Is it easy enough to take the screen apart? There isn't a sticker anywhere that's visible.
Doesn't it tell you on the Dell site what screen you get with that model or did it come with either?
if you send them the asset number or give them a call they should be able to tell you - I have always found them to be pretty helpfull.

I just did a live chat on the Dell site but they told me they couldn't provide a replacement and gave me a US number to ring!
You could try going to dells site and entering the service tag, that might tell you which screen it was supplied with.

Otherwise it's a case of taking it apart, it's not a hard job, but it's a little fiddly and it's easy to break the plastics if you don't know what you are doing.
oh that's not good, did you buy it in the US? do they know you are in the UK? something tells me the call centre is now in India, so they may have assumed you are in US.
I wouldn't go to Dell in the first place, they will charge a fortune for a replacement screen and I doubt they'd supply the part only to a member of the general public.

There are far cheaper places to get a replacement screen from (and possibly best to get it fitted for you if you are not confident doing it yourself)

£58 if it's a LCD (for the part, not including fitting)

This model has an LCD screen....
or you could see if you can get a broken one with an intact screen on ebay, people often sell broken things as spare parts.
