What could this stone be that I found in the woods?

Hi all
Whilst walking in the woods in Cheltenham today, I found an unusual bit of stone pocking out of a muddy pathway. It looks like ordinary stone on the bottom but the top part is a beautiful swirl of blue & grey stone. Almost look slike pottery. It's quite shiny on one side but matt on the top. It has a bit of a strange smell, almost sulphurous...but this could just be something in the mud it was buried in!! :)
Any ideas?

Could be a fossil........................well you never know
Any glass works in the area?
-- answer removed --
Sounds like a piece of dross, by product of furnace most often from council land fill, old glass works,or very rarely lightning. Furnace clinker was used to fill ruts in country lanes
and parks-still is in some places.
