Scottish English Accent

Where does the accent change travelling from Scotland to England or vice versa. Carlise ? Suddenly ? Gradually ? aye yes no naw is there a no mans land where they say - Bigman gonigeezwany them Gin and tonics old chap

It changes gradually and becomes stronger the further North you go. There is little difference in accents (except to the locals and dialect experts) between the far North of England and Southern Scotland ... generally the longer the distance the more the accent changes. Many words that are thought of as being Scottish are in fact comman place in Northern England.

Little Difference?? Try comparing Newcastle and Dumfries...you'd have to be Evelyn Glennie not to be able to tell the difference...while I agree that it doesn't have a distinct change when you cross the border...i think you'll find there's more of a change than you think once you hit the first major towns in england....as for similarities you'll find a lot more between Ireland & Scotland than you ever will with england.

PS for some of the users on the site the Irish word for good time is spelt CRAIC not crack!

When I was at college there was an English bloke who lived at Whitehaven in Cumbria. He spoke with what us sassanachs(sp) thought was a Scots accent. He emphasised he was not Scots, so we nicknamed him Taff!!

The border is irrelevant to this discussion - it is just a line on a map. Accents change gradually from North to South and East to West.
