Myself - I would back the Government's efforts to rescue any Brit abroad who was in trouble within reason (ie. we should never negotiate with terrorists).

However, there are some who are saying "If you go to a country run by a dictator and it all blows up in your face, you've only got yourself to blame".

Is this a popular sentiment, especially in light of the huge salaries offered to those Brits willing to work in the world's trouble spots?

I tend to agree with you. As a citizen one should be able to expect some help when things turn unexpectedly awkward.
I do back the governments efforts as I simply consider it humanitarian to help, however, I would not be sad to see the oil companies chipping in towards the cost!

I did hear that an oil company has been involved with getting some of its employees out but not sure how kosher that info is
To a degree yes, I agree.

However. If you take the 'kings shilling' and go to places like this earning alot of money and paying no tax to the UK then you should not whine like many are. We all know the risks so some responsibility must be on the individual to have a get out plan.
If they are willing to take the money then it is down to the individual to get themselves out if they start to feel threatened.

Why should the government make other people, usually members of the armed forces who are paid peanuts, go to the rescue of people working abroad and not paying taxes into the coffers?

You take the money, you take your chance...... END OF
These people are British citizens and this is not invalidated by them living and working abroad so on humanitarian grounds, these people should have the benefit of help from their mother country......in my opinion.

Many of these people although not paying UK taxes are indeed working on contracts which benefit the UK.
D'ter was on hols when the Red Shirts confict in Bangkok arose and tourists were advised to leave. Own funds enabled her departure but many others had to sit it out, at airport, due to lack of funds. No UK Gov assistance was given to them.
rescue them then bill them! Simples!
i say sort out our own goddamn country before helping out others
prendy //i say sort out our own goddamn country before helping out others //

What others are you talking about they are British nationals ?
See the thread on Oil Workers. The UK takes a lot of crude from Libya as its beautiful stuff - the Oil Worker thread has the explanation
What a Snag of a response from mightywease - the first flights out yesterday were arranged and financed by the Oil Cos. Bl--dy communists here
And those numpties mumbling about "you've only got yourself to blame" would feel exactly the same were they in that situation? Oh, no, I forgot, they aren't unwise enough to get caught out like that, are they? D!psticks.
Thanks DTcross - I thought I'd heard on the news that this morning that oil comapanies had been invloved in getting out their employees but was getting ready for work so it got drowned out by the sound of the hair dryer or something!!

Ok mightywease - I apologise for being a little too strong there - probably the effect of some daft comments on the other thread on this...... Can understand if the hair dryer got in the way!!

Eddie made a good point on the speed Libya went tits up.

Just hope the Iranians behave themselves as they are sending 2 warships through the Suez and Israeli fingers will be hovering above their missile launch buttons.

Now if Iran or Saudi was to come under the cosh, well then you would be looking at perhaps $200 a barrel plus - Libya produces only 1.8 million barrels a day and exports 1.5 - Saudi exports run at 8+ and Iran around 3.5+ - any cut there would have enormous ramifications. For example, at the moment, Saudi has agreed to release its spigots to replace the lost Libyan crude (75% down) and their crude is quite similar though not ass light - nobody could replace Saudi lost product.....
yes i totally misread the whole thing thats what u get for watching the news on mute lol sorry all
