I think it was probably me you saw saying that...
The Problem with crucial it will tell you what the maximum amount for your board as per it's specs, which is 1GB as listed above, but as I said on another thread, those specs are often based on the maximum memory module size available at the time but larger ones will invariably work.
Unfortunately there is no definite way to find out apart from try it and see, though you could try simply googling the dell model number and maximum memory to see if anyone else has put more in.
That said, I'd bet my last pound on it taking at least 1GB in each slot with no problems as there are other motherboards specs listed with the i845PE north bridge that are stated as taking upto 2GB
