rov1100 If they stopped their benefits I wonder how many parents would pick up the tab for their living costs at home. If they do start this national service and get some financial benefit there will be many parents out there making their children take it up.

There have been too many carrots under the past Labour government...what they want is more stick!

Why would you assume that all young people need a term of National Service. In my opinion this could in fact have a detrimental effect on the vast majority of good hard working kids who have no need of forces discipline whatsoever because they are already good law abiding and hard working citizens. What you in fact seem to want is all young people to go down a route approved by AOG. What you what is a load of clones.

The ones who would enter into the spirit of it don't need it and would probably be hindered by it.

The ones who do need it won't enter into the spirit of it and will be an expensive, bureaucratic pain in the ass to force into it.

As Lottie says above, most young people are way ahead of this sort of 1930s/1940s thinking.

All very true Zeuhl. It would certainly hinder a good career for a lot of young people who as you say, don't need it.

Personally, I would rather our forces are formed from people who want to be there and I am sure those same people would not welcome those that don't.

Yes, we have moved on. Young people think for themselves these days and most young people are fine. We only hear about the ones who make the news headlines on a daily basis.

I think there is a world of difference from the National Service we all did at 18 and boot camps for the antisocial element. Can't think of anything worse than putting all the yobs together at "boot camp". A previous Tory government also went into this and it came to nothing. On the other hand, outdoor pursuits/ conservation courses can work well with a good spread of types on them.

So first we make laws preventing parents and teachers from disciplining unruly kids, then when they become unruly teenagers we send them to boot camps where they receive a much harsher form of discipline.
