Central Heating

I have a 10 year old Worcester 35 CDi boiler and it is out of control. It is burning at the lowest setting --almost off-- and the radiators are too hot to touch. Gas board man said nothing wrong with the boiler but have bills 3x last year for same heating schedule. He said an insulating problem of the property but not so as am well insulated. He left and all is as was and will just have to pay up. Is it a case of new boiler. Any help much appreciated

I'm confused ............ could be faulty boiler thermostat, but even a Gas Board Engineer should be able to decide if that's the problem!
If you have a wall mounted room stat, that may be faulty, and not shutting the pump off when it should.
Otherwise, I don't think you'll be properly satisfied until you've had an approved Worcester guy check it over.

You got in before me on this one builder, seems a bit of a cop out by the gas board saying there is nothing wrong if it is burning at full rate. I would have thought it would be a faulty thermostat some where in the system for that to happen.

It definitely sounds as though you need a engineer who has done training on your specific model to be able to identify the fault, either that or it will be the expense of a new boiler.

Thanks for all suggestions. Water setting is fine I have it half way round. Radiators are controlled at the bottom by a screw but even with them turned down still hot unless at zero Scale on them is 1-6. Was not impressed with the guy from British gas as I have the Care service package. Should I call them out again or go independant.

I am now confused, having just come back home and had a look at the thread, you said that the boiler was turned all the way down and then in a reply you say that the temp setting is half way round.

Have you got separate controls for hot water and heating or are you relying on the radiator thermostatic valves

I have 2 contols for the relative temperatures. Water one is halfway round to give us a good temp for the water. Radiator conrol is jut off, off and the radiators are very hot Before when in the winter we would have to turn them right round to warm the radiators up.

3 Thermostatic rad valves (big white knob with numbers 1-5 on each rad) ..... ???

Still sounds like faulty thermostat on the boiler control for the central heating. :o(

The Builder--1&2 correct and 3 --when at the max the rads are red-hot and I have 8 rads all on and even when set at no.3 still very hot. Used to be when the boiler control was half way the rads were not as they are now.
Do I tell the gas maintance chap this (Thermostat prob)as he reported nothing wrong. Did not have much confidence in him at the time. Now if I call them out can I ask for a different chap?

If the boiler is running full time when the heating is on but the temp is turned down then as the builder and myself have both mentioned it would appear that you have a faulty thermostat.

I would definitely get the gas board back out again if you have a service contract with them, mention that the previous guy was not very helpful and they should send a different engineer. However cannot guarantee that they will be any better.

It took my parents about five attempts to get an engineer that was willing to try good old fashioned fault finding rather than the usual big lump change. Job ended up costing a few quid instead of the thousands that the other so called engineers had quoted.

Heating Circuit Thermostat.
You will need to replace it. Not much else can cause this problem. It is likeliest because your hot WATER temp is controlling ok.
