my antivirus has run out, and my husband asked me to go and buy norton. The shop i went to didn't sell it but instead persuaded me to buy AVG which is considerably cheaper. Is it any good? The man in the shop told me it was cheaper because unlike norton it's not promoted by the big shops.

Well it's a bit late now if you've bought it :)

AVG is fine, it's a well known and widely used AV solution.
How much was it?

You can get AVG for free...and I've seen it recommended on here quite a few times.
If he is trying to sell you AVG, I would question his honesty. It can be found free on the net. I personally use AVAST which is also free.
The free AVG is a cut down version of the full, paid for, AVG security suite.

well i could take it back as i haven't opened it, that's why i'm asking
I've used AVG free since about 2002 with never any problem or infection.
I am careful about which websites I visit and what I allow near my computer from the internet though.
When I did some computer courses to improve my skills all the tutors used AVG free edition.
I used to use AVG free until my PC caught something. I'm not saying another would have avoided the problem, but it was my cue to get cold feet and buy. I've since used Kaspersky, but others are good too. My woman still uses AVG free.
Your woman?! lol
I had the free version of AVG which served me well for a while till I caught something. I use Kaspersky now which I am really happy with.
AVG 2011 was recommended by Computer Active magazine as the best free anti-virus program.
I would also recommend creating a restricted user account and use that for internet access. Search on the net for how to do this.
ive had comodo internet security (free) for two years after avg ,never had any problems crop up
