It depends on the council.
My OH once had to apply for planning for a 6'x4' shed, I kid you not! A neighbour reported him and a council official arrived to imform him that he had erected the shed illegally.
However, we currently have a 5m x 3m log cabin in our garden that we did not need permission for.

heathfield, I am afraid your answer is incorrect and totally misleading. A shed is a structure and requires planning permission. On the Planning Portal site highlighted by The Builder is a summary of the types of development that are effectively given planning permission in advance (commonly called permitted development) and anything else needs a planning application. Unless your shed is so portable you take it inside your house every evening??!!
So harry - the answer is 'maybe'!!
