herpes in pregnancy
Hi everyone im new on here, hope you can help..
im currently 8 weeks pregnant, last feb i was diagnosed with having genital herpes..
At the time i was given tablets to help with the symptoms/sores and it cleared up in a week or so..
since then i havent had another 'outbreak' .. i feel like i might be getting them again..if i do while im pregnant is it dangerous? i know it is if your giving birth naturally as it may transfer to the baby, but what about during pregnancy? thanks

As far as i know it does not effect the baby whilst youre pregnant if youve had it a while, as the baby will have any antibodies from you. The risk to baby even if you have a flare up when in labour is minimal.
As long as your midwife and hospital are aware they will give you all the advice and help you may need.

Hi Fiona,
As much as I hate to admit it, I too have genital herpes! I'm in my 15Th week of pregnancy.
I hate the thought of having this, I'm such a clean & careful uptogether person but I could have caught it years ago.
I had my first outbreak just before I found out I was pregnant (which was agony) I had the outbreak due to a low immune system, since then I've had 3 recurrences.
The internet says I can't have a natural birth but my mid-wife says different so don't believe everything you read. Please let me know how you get on today.... x

Did you speak with your mid-wife yesterday? I'm seeing my mid-wife Friday & again going to bring it up because I've had a recent recurrence but apparently that is a good thing as the baby builds up antibodies against the infection.
Like you, I can count on one hand how many people I've slept with before my hubby to be. However, I did have a boyfriend who had cold sores but apparently that can't give you genital herpes (God it sounds gross) & I've never had a cold sore in my life.. All weird & not wonderful!
Don't worry your not alone!! x

i've never had a cold sore in my life either! it's weird how it works isnt it..!
i spoke to the midwife yesterday and she said i should be ok, and if i have an active outbreak when i go into labour i'll need a c-section to prevent it being passed to baby..
let me know what your midwife says as well
