Alfie - great line
5 Answers
In the top film 'Alfie' our silver-tongued hero says to camera when he finds a hot water bottle in his bed... 'hot water bottle - she's being a bit previous'. Great line, makes me laugh. er.. but I don't actually know what he means. Anyone help ?

It means he regards her as acting older than she should for her age i.e. having a hot water bottle in bed (usually associated with pensioners). It's a bit of a false line anyway as quite a number of young women use hot water bottles when they're having their period, but there you go, still a top movie..........
Coming from that era, when central heating wasn't invented - I think he means that the lady in question was assuming they would land up together in the bed later on and so she was warming it up in advance. The expression 'being previous' is usually used to mean 'making assumptions'.....
I saw the film again recently and was struck, not only by the fact that it IS indeed an ace movie, but also what a concise record it portrayed of the time.....
Halcyon Days - NOT.
