In 1921, Lincoln Steffans, an American journalist, said: "I have seen the future and it works", after a visit to the Soviet Union. Since then, of course, there have been dozens of variations on the 'works' angle...it stinks...it's pear-shaped...it's female...and whatever else suits the writer at the time. I've never actually heard your version and a google search throws up only one instance of it, which I don't for a moment believe to be the one you want.
