It later came to mean that which was being cooked as well. Apparently French in origin, meaning saucepan, which in turn was the diminutive of Old French casse or ladle. Also from Old Proven�al cassa which originated from the Medieval Latin cattia or dipper, from Greek kuathion, diminutive of kuathos, also referencing a ladle.
