MP3 player but don't want Apple

I used to have iTunes (only to download stuff to listen to on the computer) but was enraged when I realised all the things I'd downloaded couldn't be put onto anything but Apple products (naive I know). Just want to put CDs onto laptop in whatever format Microsoft will default to, then put them on an MP3 player, 2gb would suffice. Do other makes as well as Apple force you to use a very specific format or are the rest quite 'free'? Any recommendations? Thanks

I've got three Sony mp3 players which you can just drag and drop stuff onto. You don't need any fancy software.

One more thing to ask - if I do download the odd tune from a non-Apple site, will it automatically fit with a Sony player or are there any other restrictions? Any good sites?

Archos have been making mp3 players for a long time. I usually opt for manufacturers that have been trying and testing for the longest. afaik, they make players that can handle many other formats too (including mp3).
