Has this date been officially made a bank holiday ? We have been told at work that it is to be treated as any other day although staff wishing to take a days holiday will be able to (that was big of them lol) but no enhanced payments will be paid (contracts state BH paid at time and half)

What happens normally at your place on a Bank Holiday?

Bank holidays are normally paid and time and half
Yes it is an offical bank holiday, but it is up to your employers what entitlement they give.
no place of employment has to give you the day off or enhanced payment
Would that be a day's unpaid leave ? Or a day out of your existing entitlement ?
Gawd we get little enough for putting up with this outdated institution, one would have hoped the odd day off paid, might be forthcoming. But that's life I suppose.
Indeed, otherwise imagine the chaos if the police, ambulance and fire service were to close for the day so they could wave their Union Jacks at the telly.
The website 237SJ gives is http://www.direct.gov...vingintheUK/DG_073741

Looks as if your employers have to treat the 29th April the same as other bank holidays.
but they dont have to pay extra or give you the day off if its not in your contract
The link says the same as the advice given, you have no automatic right to any bank holidays from your employer, the only thing they HAVE to do is abide by the minimum of 28 days paid leave per year.
I'm not denying that employers need not cover the cost of a day off, but I will say chaos can be avoided by allowing (insisting) some occupations take a different day off in lieu. I think many would prefer that anyway.
in this economic climate a lot of companies cannot afford for people to have the day off and pay it as well
True gina, in fact with the bank holidays this year falling as they are, staff only need take 3 days of their leave in order to have an 11 day break, if they are entitled to all the bh days, as we are where I work. It's a lot of work to cover for a small company!
Sorry to go off topic but have you applied for The Chase yet chelle? Closing date 16th March
HI Squarebear, not yet still psyching myself up! Have you and mazie? (Nice to see a win on it this week too).
