Diabetes-sugar rising

I'm type2 diabetic. I've recently moved on to medication(metformin) also I've stopped smoking and using nictine replacement lozenges. My blood sugar has risen and contin ues to do so which is a worry. Are any of these things connected?

What levels are we looking at?
?Metformin 850mgms twice daily.

anjakel is right.........exercise.....swimming or walking.
