If you mean the tax levied per person by the conservatives in the early 90s to replace domestic rates, then Loosehead has the right answer.

The Poll Taxes levied by various governments between 1290 and 1872 were just called "Poll Tax" as far as can be ascertained from the official records - no doubt locals had other names for them!
