Who is Derek Smith?

Last weekend my brother was awarded a trophy for flying.

It is called the Derek Smith Trophy, Was he a test pilot? Unable to find anything of substance.

Not sure if it is the same one, but possibly a big wig in the Air Cadets and British Gliding association (BGA).

"Quite fittingly, the last glider launch took place three days later when the privately owned Slingsby Cadet MKIII was flown by the former supply officer, Flt Lt (retired) Derek Smith and his wife Joan. From 618�s formation, until it left West Malling over 3000 cadets flew their first glider solo and gained their wings with 618VGS."

Other than that it could just be someone who sponsors the event and the trophy, not necessarily an old pilot, maybe just a benefactor interested in flying.
