Has anyone used one of those vacuum devices for removing wax from the ear - they are advertised regularly in mail order catalogues.

Don't use them! Wax in your ears is a natural substance, put there deliberately by the body to defend your delicate inner ear from invaders. It shouldn't be seen as an offensive thing.
