Please note that my wife, to day received a letter stating she has won £12,500. She must place an order with payment to receive this PRIZE.
This I believe is a scam. Do not send money.
if she's won the prize she's won, why would she need to pay???
anything like this usually a scam.
have you checked the letter for spelling mistakes etc... as i used to get e-mails saying this and that but just ignored them and they went away.
most of these just get send to a po box number and then they end up in nigeria or somewhere like that.
Some competitions like this are perfectly legitimate, I had one from a plant supplier the other day - you can only enter the competition if you've placed an order. They only want their customers to participate, I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

^ PS I bet if you read the weeny print, it doesn't actually say she's won - surely it says that she has been selected to be on the shortlist to win - that's what I usually get! If it does say she's definitely won, then yes, I would just shred it.
