You can guess from the title what I have done, I drove the car from the garage approx 500yds with no apparent effects, not sure whether its because there was at least half a tank of deisel prior to topping up with petrol. Anyway car now with the jaguar dealer who have quoted between 839 and 3000 to recitify the problem. Has anybody had simular problems.

Well I can see 3 grand if there's actually been damage but 800 minimum?
I would ask them for a break down of exactly what 800 represents after all that's a full day labour at 100 per hour.
I can only assume that they're planning to replace all the seals in the fuel system or something like that.
Look at taking it to an independant garage
take the car to the dump and rip up your driving license. If you are that stupid should you really be driving?
What next lawn-mower the carpet? Hoover the lawn? Put a toaster in the bath to heat the water? Put toast in the VCR? Wax a cloth sofa? You trail of "mistakes" could get worse and potentially fatal.
Take the bus. However, dont think the driver will accept a jar of marmite as a bus pass.
On a serious note , on modern diesel engines the whole fuel sysyem is at operating pressure , not just the injectors, the system is lubricated by the diesel fuel and if run on petrol it damages the moving parts of the fuel system , it can cost anything up to 5000 to repair but!!! at the moment many insurance companies are classing it as accidental damage.
Phew!
Give him a break!!!
Ward-Minter; that was spot on.
I've just gone and had an absolute nightmare of a week, topping it off by putting petrol into a 2 mnth old diesel Audi. I must admit, the first thought that entered my mind was "this is usually the type of thing I take the michael out of the Mrs. for" !!! i couldnt beleive it, and dont think I will EVER forgive myself. I had no idea i could be that absent-minded.
Unfortunately, my mechanic wouldn't take my Marmite as payment for the bill. ;0)
To go back to the original question; i had my mechanic drain the tank and fuel lines; and that was it. A week later we eneded up having to change the fuel filters, but that's pennies compared to the 800 quid quoted above.
I agree - seek out those independant chaps...
