Too many teeth?!

This is a bit strange really. I have noticed last night my 6yr old has 6 molar milk teeth at the top and another 6 at the bottom but I thought children were only supposed to have 8 in total? These cant be the adult ones can they? She has lost 9 milk teeth but not molars yet. I am confused! Before she got some of her adult teeth this would have meant she had a set of 24 milk teeth instead of 20.

At six years of age, you are most likely looking at: first deciduous molar, second deciduous molar, and first permanent molar in each quadrant of your child's mouth. The first permanent molar normally erupts around 6 years of age, in a position behind the second decidous molar, and sounds entirely normal!

But surely that would have hurt to get 4 permanent molars? She has never said anything about it and they seem to have been there ages?! I'm still confused!

The is a site on the net where it shows you a graphic-thing which is animated and it shows the order that the teeth fall out and the new ones grow (and I think it gives an indication of age too). Did try to find it for you but can't remember what you need to google to find it.

Most children's permanent teeth erupt painlessly, and many parents are surprised to find out that their chilren already have permanent teeth.

Well I certainly am surprised if she has suddenly got 4 new molars! If they are so painless at that age why arent they for babies?! I'm having a nightmare with her brother lol.

Generally kids get their adult teeth painlessly, some babies don't even ' teethe ' in the accepted sense others go through murders poor wee mites. I can't remember any of our kids having pain when their adult teeth started coming in Tig so I agree I think it's quite normal.

Hi my kids all got their teeth in once past the baby stage with no pain, some have extra teeth others have some missing. My twins, one has one front adult tooth missing the other has 2 front adult teeth missing, just never going to come in they are 20 and still no sign, hubby had 5 extra teeth, dentist says it happens sometimes skips a generation. Not everyone has wisdom teeth either.
