Why is there a distinction between byes and leg byes when neither are awarded to the batsman as runs, why just not have byes whether they touch the batsman or not?

Only difference I can think of is that byes are considered to be the fault of the wicket-keeper, and are considered negatively against him for statistical purposes.

So Steve if a batsman holds his bat in the air and it hits his leg (& no lbw comes into the equation) and they get a run what does it count as?

In that case no runs are credited if the umpire feels no attempt was made to play the ball
