Blurred characters on laptop

I have a very strange problem on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. The sybols and characters on the desktop icons and open windows are blurred and look like they have the same image on top but not central if that makes sense. When I run the cursor over them without clicking a button they become clear again until I shut down the window and open it up again. The machine came with Vista installed but I have upgraded via the Dell scheme to Win 7. Any ideas - it is driving me mad!!!!!

Have you...

1) ensured you have the correct graphics drivers installed.

2) checked you are running the screen at the optimum screen resolution.

Thanks CF. I have checked I am running the optimum screen resolution but I don't know if I have the latest graphics driver installed.
I will check tonight. Why would it suddenly start to appear blurred though?
