painting my kitchen..

right, so it's half tiled (white) and half papered (a light turquoise shade). the bathroom leaked through plenty of times (all fixed now) so there are brown watermarks on the paper. it's very unsightly. I can't afford to do a big make-over this year but plan to paint both the tiles and the paper a rich creamy colour.

1) what preparation do I need to do?
2) do tiles look reasonable once painted? do I need to use a proper primer?
3) do I really need to use kitchen paint?

I like DIY.. for the first 10 minutes!

Clean the tiles with Cillit Bang & paint the wallpaper with a nice coloured sheen emulsion.Ron.

In terms of paint - I thoroughly recommend getting the Dulux hardwearing stuff - can't remember what it's called - that way you can still get a nice matt finish (can't stand silk!) but it is wipeable.

yup me neither sara - kitchen and bathroom paint always has a sheen to it - the Endurance (see, remembered the name now!) paint is proper Matt finish. I got it mixed in a beautiful soft green for my kitchen, dining room, hall (upstairs and down) stairs and utility - basically all the areas that get a lot of traffic with kids trailing hands and bashing school bags etc. Been up a year now and completely unmarked! - haven't even had to wipe it as it seems resistant to dirt!!!

hmmm... that sounds ideal! I am looking for a soft green colour to re-paint the units :o)

We get ours specially mixed and it doesn't appear on the paint charts or in the samples anymore - mainly cos it looks rubbish on the chart but it is beautiful on! My neighbour has now got the code from me and has had the same colour mixed for her house. It's difficult to get a pale green that doesn't look minty or chalky. Our kitchen units are a cream colour and the tiles are maroon (we didn't pick it!) - sounds awful, but the green goes lovely with it.

I painted over the tiles in our kitchen, and put random stick-on transfers (Homebasse/ B&Q) to add interest - they look OK to me, and saved buying fancy new tiles.
