Yesterday, from the council, we got a small kitchen caddy which we can fill will all food scraps, cooked or uncooked and put into the same bin as grass cuttings and garden waste. We`ve also been 150 bio bags to line the bins for the waste or you can wrap it up in kitchen roll or newspaper. Do you think this will also include things like banana skins and if so, why cant we put them straight into the bin amongst the garden waste ? They would rot down quicker. We get through so many bananas, but not much general food waste that we would be filling the kitchen caddy up in no time just with them, Sorry, Im rambling......

IMO, the food waste bin is for things like bits of meat, scraps with protein. We have a compost bin (rather than a food bin like yours) and certainly yes, my raft of banana skins goes in there. If I were you I would put all my fruit and veg scraps and peelings in the garden waste bag, they are all compostable, think of it that way, and the green waste will be composted or dug in. My understanding is that your kitchen caddy is for stuff which won't break down, stuff you'd want to keep away from rats and seagulls - meat, fish, sauces, cat food and the like.
Hi there. I work for local council reycling section and we provide exactly the same thing. The bags are there to educe the nuisence that cause neighbours complaints and unpleasantness for the collection crews. I would advice that you use the bags provided or the council might not take the waste. Give your council a call and ask them to be sure.Home composting is best but use the caddy for stuff you cant compost yourself. If you havent enough space in the caddy just ask for an extra one. Hope this helps. ... -Jez
