This will get a lot of replies and recommendations, just like which make or model of car does anyone prefer.
I have used AVG free version for about nine years on W98, ME, XP and Vista on our family's PCs without problems and it regularly gets good reviews and recommendations in the computer magazines.
I have just got a new laptop with six months McAffee included. I don't like it and will ditch it in favour of AVG when the free trial expires and they ask for a share of my hard earned pension.
It seems intrusive, just as Kaspersky that I see of friends' PCs seems to be.
That said, it's my personal choice and I'm very careful about sites I visit and links I click on.
Other people have had different experiences and will shout in favour of their own personal preference.

Dont confuse "anti virus software" with "internet security software".
Your McAfee is probably a full internet security suite (it may be, you dont say if it is or not). If it is a full security suite then it will chekc for viruses, malware, and all sorts of other things.
If you ditch McAfee and replace it with JUST an anti virus product you are leaving yourself wide open. Most anti virus software ONLY looks for viruses (and maybe a little malware).
So make sure if you ditch McAfee you replace it with something like for like.
