Men In Taverns.... Such an uncouth lot.

On the theme of the forthcoming Royal Wedding, I read this the other day about a past Royal Wedding, which amused me:-
"Permission to broadcast the Queen Mother and George VI's wedding in 1923 was refused by the Abbey for fear that 'men in taverns' would be listening with their hats on....."
Oh, how times have changed... The meaning of men 'keeping their hats on' these days has a completely different interpretation !!

It would have only been the radio in 1923. Hardly the case for doffing their hats. (whichever kind).
In the cinema- As I recall there would be a mad rush at the end of the picture to avoid having to stand there while the National Anthem was played. A wonder someone wasn't trampled in the rush. Or perhaps there was and they just got brushed into the nearest row of seats.
