another weeds in grass quetsion

I have a small patch of grass which has some very large weeds not tall grass like ones but squat leafy ones, I want' to be able to use the grass to feed my rabbits and guinea pigs so cannot put down a weed killer, could i pull the weeds out by digging down with say a dinner fork ( I have no gardening equipment) or will I have to just spray and leave my pets with just the hay i buy.

if you dig them out you have to make sure you get all of the root else they'll grow back.
