Why should the Icelanders pay off the debt of a failed commercial enterprise. The people who put in their money - attracted I seem to recall by quite high interest rates - made the gamble and lost. If you buy shares in a Company and they lose value or the Enterprise goes belly-up no one rushes to pay you off !!!
I think the point that has been missed here is the decision has been taken, not by the Icelandic government, but by the people. I cannot fault them for voting in favour of their own narrow interest, and given the choice I would do the same. This is why referenda are alien to the British system of government, parliament is elected precisely to tackle thorny problems like these. I hope Cameron isn't getting too many ideas; referenda are an easy way of passing the buck. If we were governed by referenda then we would not be in the EU and public executions would be the norm (why have I suddenly warmed to the idea?)
This was misappropriated funds lodged by Councils in this bank, as I recall. We're now paying higher council tax to make up the loss AND getting less service from the council.
If the money was re-paid do you think our council tax would be reduced - like hell; I say keep it Iceland as its fraudsters money.
