I have always had this disagreement about the difference in pronouncing certain words usually between northern & southern ppl. When I was at school and learning the alphabet we were taught parrot fashion and oo was oooo, so to me book is book and not buck, look is look and not luck coz luck has a different meaning. I was never taught that the e was silent only that the e elongated the previous vowel, so scone is scone not scon, trouble is there is always an exception ie phone is phone and not phon.
I've always gone for scon, but the arguement over over some words pronunciation will never be settled, a few weeks ago the boss and myself were in the Saracens Head In Southwell when a fight broke out between two old boys. It turned out they were both life long inhabitants of the town argueing about if it should be pronounced Southwell or Suthell
I think we should always agree to differ on this subject, you can find examples all over the place. I have a very good friend who is learning English, she is French and she is constantly questioning me about pronunciations and she is finding the English language very difficult, just one example out of many.......bough, bow, whether, weather, thought, though. It's a mine field really, I'm so glat that English is my mother tongue I would hate to have to learn it now.
