There is nothing worse than for a child of mature years to be confronted by a parent asking for an explanation of a risqué remark. Squirming with embarrassment doesn't get a look in. Way back in the 70s when I was in my late 20s I was watching an episode of "Are You Being Served" with my mother. Suddenly she turned to me and asked why everyone laughed when Mrs Slocombe mentioned her pussy. I tried to wriggle out of it by saying that it was just silly baby talk and that some people will laugh at anything. This did not satisfy her, and she persisted by saying that I was laughing as well, so it must mean something else. Under threat of not being fed ever again unless I told what I knew I managed, after about 30 minutes of tergiversation, to explain the double-entendre in the most delicate terms. She turned to me utterly shocked and told me in no uncertain terms that she had not brought me up to know such filthy things, and where had I got it from? I could only reply, "Grammar school, University, the Royal Air Force, all of which I think were your idea in the first place".

The same mother used to howl with laughter on a Sunday afternoon at the gay polari of Julian and Sandy in "Round The Horne", without understanding a word. Thank God she didn't ask me to translate.
