When I approach 70 years of age and state truthfully that I can read a car number plate at 20.5 metres and do not need driving glasses will I still be called to prove this (seems a waste of taxpayers money!)?

my licence runs out in July, I have got the letter in the post which I can renew on line if I want to or send back the form, I am over 70 and can also read a number plate at that distance.I believe the new licence will be valid for three years only not the usual 10.

at the test you have to , the examiner asks you to demonstrate it, how is the taxpayer involved in checking you can see 20.5 metres with or without glasses?
My dad failed his eye test and it turned out he had a cataract without knowing, so some good came of it.
He does not miss driving and I am glad he has given up as he was an erratic driver.
no you dont have to prove it. I just got mine and answered truthfully and that was it, licence renewed
My dad had to go to a DVLA centre, how comes you did not??
Funnygirl, I just got a letter in the post and a form to fill in and that was it
Guess you were lucky then.
Might be different in different areas of the country though I dont see why it should be.
Nor I.

I thought you had to resit some sort of driving test when you reach 70 - is this not so? From what you've posted, is it just a paper exercise?
My husband had glaucoma and had to go to an optician designated by the DVLA every three years for an eye test before they would issue him with a driving licence. Mine was issued automatically and they never queried anything. I consider myself too old to drive now and when it is renewable I shall not renew it.
