When will my mouth stop bleeding?

Hi guys,

My orthodontic adventures continue....

I had a pre-molar extracted at about 3pm this afternoon. The absolute floods of bleeding have stopped but it is still bleeding constantly. I can put another roll of gauze in, which stops the gross dripping blood onto my tongue, but as soon as I take the gauze out it starts again. I thought the whole point was that the gauze is meant to stop the bleeding?!

Can anyone offer my any tips or advice to sort my gob out please? I just want to watch TV and have a drink like a normal person! I can't use my wisdom tooth extraction for comparison as I got stitches then, so never had this problem!

Thanks in advance.

Don't take the gauze out for a couple of hours.
Suck ice cubes and move them with your tongue to the side of the mouth and around the gum of your extracted tooth.
I was always advised to use salty water to stop the bleeding.
I once had a tooth taken out - top back left - around 3pm and it bled like a bastard until around 10 in the evening. I was told to leave gauze in and not to fiddle with it and if needed pack another bit in so there was pressure on the wound...

Ok so my dentist saying leave the gauze in for 20 minutes was a tad optimistic? I've been told about the salt rinses but that I must not do this til 24 hours after it stops bleeding. Which feels like it may be never at the moment! What's good for hiding the taste of blood cos its rank!!
snag's advice is excellent.

OK so I just need to sit here until bedtime with gauze in my mouth? How am I meant to eat and drink?
Drink through a straw on the opposite side of the wound.

Has the injection worn off yet? Once the pain kicks in you won't want to eat anything!

;-p

Using a straw is one of the things on the banned list because it stops the clotting apparently :(

My face is just starting to go all cold and tingly so I suspect the injections are starting to wear off. My next problem is how to take the painkillers with a wad of gauze in my gob!
Awww poor you, I've been in the same situation and its not pleasant. Yes pressure around the wound is what's needed and it will stop i the end.

Although to be honest I should right this evening off. Give up on the prospect of eating and drinking tonight except maybe a sip of water here and there and to take a painkiller. (Which I should do now rather than wait until the injection has worn off fully)

Have another painkiller at 10pm and go to bed. Tomorrow's another day!

Really? I used one. If you push it far enough back in to your mouth then it won't be near/touching the wound at all...

Maidup - really? I knew it wasn't going to be fun but that sounds really miserable :(

snags - its to do with the suction changing the pressure in your mouth or something apparently, which breaks the blood clot.... pleasant hey?!
I hope you're mouth is feeling more comfortable now bushbaby? Any better?

Thank you for checking up on me :)

Its eased up a bit but there's still a steady drip of blood down onto my tongue if I take the gauze out. Should I worry yet? Should I just take the gauze out and hope it stops?
Don't take the gauze out whatever you do.The gauze right next to where the extraction was is trying to help a clot form,if you bit on it slightly or press on it,that's just like when you are told with a wound to apply pressure.
Don't use any salt washed until it has defiantly stopped bleeding tomorrow, your dentist should of told you this.
I know it can seem scary when the bleeding goes on and on,but keep the first piece of gauze where it is and eventually it will stop.
Good luck

good advice her from ayabrea!.................leave the gauze there to allow clotting!.....if you keep taking it away then clotting can't happen!............don't do the salt wash until the wound has stopped bleeding, this will help with healing, not clotting...........hope it's feeling better soon!...........
Sorry I've been on the phone and only just back here. I agree, just leave the gauze in a bit longer and take another a painkiller if you need to.

Try to get some sleep - hope you feel better in the morning.

Hi guys, thank you all so much for your help yesterday. It finally stopped properly bleeding around 11pm, after I basically sat with gauze in all night with a cold compress on my face. It still feels way too raw to want to brush my teeth or eat anything though as I'm scared it will start bleeding again - am I just being a wimp?!
Glad to hear it`s stopped bleeding, just sip cool drinks and eat soft foods for to-day that you don`t have to chew.
