. . . and I'm still not sure whether I should feel proud or annoyed.

Five days before the Grand National, I tipped Ballabriggs to win.

My problem was that, because I was aware of the concerns over animal welfare, I wasn't really happy about supporting the race by betting on it. However, by Saturday morning, I'd decided that I'd put £10 each way on Ballabriggs. I planned to do it as soon as I'd collected my (77 year old) friend from her holiday accommodation on the Suffolk coast, and driven her (and her two dogs) home.

However, during the journey she expressed her total disgust at the treatment of the horses. By the time we got back home, I'd decided not to place my bet.

Ballabriggs won, at 14/1. So should I feel proud of sticking to my principles, or kick myself for not placing the bet?

I agree with you but (after having just completed some fairly well-paid temporary work) I've recently 'signed on' again. The £195 I've had got back (winnings + stake) is equal to three weeks income at the moment (JSA at £65 per week) so it represents quite a big hole in my pocket!

Well Chris, I don't bet often either, but after seeing your prediction on AB, I had a flutter on Ballabriggs, and took the odds when placing the bet, I got 18 to 1!.........Thank you, my grandchildren benefited greatly from your prediction!........nice new shoes!.........

My dad use to place bets for me on the GN when I was a kid but I didn't know any better at the time. I've been to Royal Ascot a couple of times in the past but again didn't realise what happens to some horses. I'm not really into horse racing anyway.

others? millions bet on the National and nothing will change, the same debate goes on each year. 2 more horses died yesterday, last weeks dead horses are no longer news.
A few fences may be tweaked and a statement may be put out that 'the race is much safer for the changes' Then everything will be ok.

as chris posted. 2 horses died at yesterdays scottish grand national,,,,,,,,i normally would bet on the GN . but no more, horses dying needlessley.
