I have a 10MB cable broadband connection, which works very well when wired, but when I set it up wirelessly, the connection speed drops dramatically. When I move the cursor over the wireless icon, it shoes the connection speed as 1mb.My router is a Netgear 108mbps router, so why is the conection so slow?
Also, when I try to set up a second laptop to the wireless connection, I cant get connected. The icon shows it is aquiring an ip address, but this is how it remains, and I cant get a connection.I have double checked all of the settings, and they are identical to my other laptop which is connected wirelessly (albeit at 1mbps). What I find wierd is that when I move the cursor over the wireless icon on the laptop that wont connect, it shows a speed of 108bps, but with no connection because it is still aquiring the address..
First thing to try is to sit right next to the router and then connect to it. What speed do you get then?
Second, is the wireless card in the computer capable of 108Mb? ie, is it an 802.11g card?
As for the other laptop not connecting, is it allowed access to the router? What are the router's security settings for MAC address restrictions? What are the DHCP settings? Maybe it can only dish out one IP address at a time, hence this 2nd laptop can't get one.
Hi Guys, many thanks for your answers.
Ethel,I have disabled the firewall, but it has made no difference.
Obonio, both laptops are 802.11g capable. The router definately allows more than one conection because it was used at work with several laptops connected wirelessly. I am using the WEP security because I am a bit lost when it comes to MAC addresses.Everything else in the router was set up automatically when I accessed the router settings.I am not entirely sure what DHCP setting are.
Ethel. you are a superstar. I rebooted everything in the order you specified, and both of my laptops are now connected wirelessly, and both are showing a speed of 54mbps.
I'm not known for my simple approaches to things! Though a power cycle is always worth a try first off. And never forget percussive maintenance is worth a shot if all else fails.
if you need to make internet speed test means you can just try to approach here http://www.ip-details.com/ and get the accurate result from here.... Media URL: http://www.ip-details.com/ Description:
