Could someone explain why in the newspapers, the photograph of Captain Lisa Jade Head, (the lady bomb disposal officer who met a tragic death) has her rank on her shoulders "hair-brushed " out ?????????

If she was wearing combat gear then rank badges are worn on a tag round the neck, rather than on the shoulder, which may not be visible in the photograph.
Just combed through the papers and couldn't find anything.
I am not familiar with Military uniforms, but possibly the photo was taken before she was a captain, so instead of showing her rank incorrectly, it was omitted?

If the picture you're talking about is the one of her in mess dress it appears to have been taken in 2005 (12th August to be precise), in it her shoulder braids appear to be 'wrapped' in fabric, looks as if she was still at Sandhurst at that time according to the MOD so maybe that has a bearing on it.
It had a centre parting.
If this were chatterbank, and it wasn't about a dead soldier, I may have made a joke about 'hairbrushed' - but it isn't, it is, so I won't.
Here is the photo under discussion

Gromit, that's the one I checked and according to the EXIF it's from 2005.
So note really an issue then

Lets instead concentrate on the bravery of the girl.
