Convert solar to mains

I've seen a number of questions here about how useless solar lights are for the garden and I have to agree. However, is it possible to convert them to be mains operated? I know transformers etc. would be needed - my two strings of solar led lights both run off 2 (each) AA rechargeables. These are 'hard wired' e.g soldered and linked together, so its not the easiest thing to take the batteries out and recharge. I wondered if a conversion to mains operation was a possible/viable alternative?

Probably more bother than it's worth. You'd have to have not just a transformer, but a system that would supply 3v d.c. , and changing things round might not be cost-effective. It's probably easiest to get a set of 12v garden lights that come with their own transformer. There are quite a few of these available.

It is possible to power the lights via low voltage dc – but should you not remove the batteries, you run the risk of your low voltage supply overcharging the batteries with the remote possibility of the batteries exploding.

So if you do decide on this option – I would strongly recommend you remove or disconnect the batteries.

Personally I would recommend you purchase suitable ‘outdoor’ Christmas lights – which don’t look too Christmassy.

In defence of the solar powered lights. I bought mine from a £1 store and they look really nice when the sun goes down. My neighbour purchased more expensive ones and they don't look any better .
