At a gathering of friends this weekend, two of the group were adamant (not the 80's pop star) that Minstrels used to be called something else. They were slightly older than me (I'm 32) and I'm certain they've only ever been called Minstrels in my lifetime. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Hopefully - yes! Mars used to make 'Treets' for the UK market, then when everything became standardized they merged into 'Minstrels'. These days the closest thing you can get to the old 'Treets' are 'Revels'.

I'm a similar age and I don't remember Minstrels being called anything but Minstrels. Treets were different. They had a peanut centre. The nearest equivalent today would be peanut M&Ms, not Revels.
Have just read the link above but don't remember any other variety of Treets other than peanut. I don't remember Treets pre-dating Minstrels, though. I thought they were confectionery contemporaries.
In a very similar fashion to the classic ripple, minstrals became Galaxy Minstrals. Prior to this they were plain old minstrals but did have a slightly different bag, which may be a source of some of the confusion. Treets were exclussively peanut base, I know because I cant stand peanut and choclate and therefore hated them as a kid.
You are both a couple of 'doubting Thomases' Treets were sugar coated plain chocolate before the peanut variety came along. My son remembers them well - and he's a good deal younger than you two.

I have to agree with Cetti. Yes, there were the peanut-shaped peanut Treets, but there were also the flat, chocolate only variety. As I recall, didn't they come in a bright yellow packet? Aaaah, memories!

I do remember Treets, yes, but I'm not totally convinced they were ever officially rebranded as Minstrels. Maybe that's what my friends were thinking of though - Treets. Thanks for all the postings - interesting stuff!
I stand corrected but I must say I can never recall anything other than Peanut Treets.
The Treets slogan was " melts in your mouth, not in your hand" - this slogan was then taken up by M&M's, which I believe was the replacement and not Minstrels. Ring any bells now?
if my memory serves me correct they were simply called galaxy buttons
