are there any measures i can take to ensure my lawn emerges at peak condition next spring?

Sure... as long as the ground hasn't frozen, add a good quality lawn fertilizer sometime from mid-October to early November.  If the ground has dried out, be sure to dampen it first.  Use a fertilizer with the first number on the bag (nitrogen) being fairly high... at least 15 or 20.  The second numbers should be fairly low.  I would look for 20-5-10.  Apply at about 3 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet of lawn.  If you're able, water a few times before freeze up occurs.  by the way, mow your lawn first, and if the weather is such that it continues to grow, don't let it get over 2 to 3 inches in length.  Best of luck!

As well as giving it an autumn feed try to walk on it as little as possible during the winter and not at all (unless vital!) if it's frosty or there's snow on it. 

Forgot to say that if you have any leaves falling on it rake them up regularly, don't wait until there's a thick covering!
