HTC Wildfire notifications

How can I turn off the notifications for emails, they are driving me mad, but need notification for Whatsapp. If I turn it onto silent I hear no calls or anything. It says edit message settings but cannot find them, and I have downloaded the instructions onto the computer, but still no use! Thank you.
