Our cat has dark snotty marks in his nostrils...

A couple of weeks ago we adopted 2 gorgeous 7 month old cats from a very reputable animal shelter, both fit and well and up to date with all their jabs, etc.
Over the past week we've noticed that one of them started to look as if he had some sort of dark discharge in his left nostril (it wasn't runny and looked at first as if he just had something stuck) he now has both nostrils in the same condition and we wondered if anyone has had this happen to them?
Both cats are wonderfully happy and both appear to be in perfect health apart from poor Fred's nose...I'm going to phone the vet tomorrow but any advise from any answerbankers out there would be great.
