Can anybody identify the origin of these sounds?

This is an audio clip from a documentary (Naked Planet - Niagara Falls 1999). That's why it has some background noise. I realize the music is electronically generated, but is anybody familiar with how it is done, or better yet, what the original piece is, or others like it? It may be a MIDI generated from a whistling sample, but I'm not completely sure, but perhaps somebody here knows better.
